Meditation is a group of techniques commonly used in spiritual traditions. During meditation, a person focuses on breathing and relaxing, while silencing the mind. Some of the main benefits to women are relaxation, mental calmness, alertness and psychological balance. Meditation can also change how you relate to your flow of emotions and thoughts, and may help you control how you respond to a challenging situation by thinking ahead. It can also help treat physical conditions associated with stress.

Physical Benefits

Women often lead stressful lives. While some stress is beneficial to propel you forward, chronic stress is not. MayoClinic.com suggests that meditation is good for conditions that are worsened by stress such as asthma, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, fatigue, binge eating, depression, insomnia and pain. When women bring their stress levels down, many of these conditions improve.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

According to the Orchid Recovery Center, meditation is a great self-treatment for controlling mild to moderate anxiety. It also helps women increase their concentration and drones out excessive mind chatter that happens frequently. In addition, women can use meditation to focus on tasks or achievements in the near future, and use visualizations to help them accomplish these things before they actually happen.

Choose a Time to Meditate

With practice, you can meditate anywhere and at any time. However, it is beneficial for beginners to set aside a time. You can try meditating first thing in the morning or late at night to see which time gives you the greatest results. As you get better at meditation, you will be able to take a few minutes anywhere you are and go to your silent place.

Find a Quiet Place to Focus

In order to meditate effectively, you need to find a place free of as many distractions as possible. This means that children, pets, telephones and pagers are silenced. Meditation is your time to focus and relax, which is almost impossible with distractions. When you first start meditating, it may be hard to quiet all of the mind chatter that happens. Try your hardest to allow thoughts to come in and leave without much focus. This will get easier as you practice.

Use Aromatherapy to Enhance Meditation

If you enjoy scents, you can use aromatherapy to enhance your session. Find a pleasant scent that you like and then rub it on your wrists or diffuse it through a ring or candle. If you are doing meditation in the tub, you can also add essential oils to your bath water. Always do the skin patch test for reactions before bathing in oils.

Use Relaxation Breathing

Breath work is extremely important in meditating. Besides, breathing is a natural function and is easy to focus on when your mind begins wandering. MayoClinic.com suggests taking deep breaths and listening to yourself inhale and exhale. Relaxation breaths, which are slow and rhythmic can be done anywhere and are effective for bringing stress levels down almost immediately.

Use Music to Enhance Your Meditation

Many women feel awkward sitting in silence. If you enjoy music, it may benefit you to put on some music, something light with just instrumentals or sounds. It is well known that music can enhance your mood, so it has the ability to enhance the clarity of your session. It can also help with vision work. It's much easier to see yourself on the beach if you hear the waves.
