Typically, you hang a punching bag by attaching a chain or nylon strap to an eyebolt at the ceiling. To move the bag to another location, you first have to install another eyebolt. In rooms that have exposed joists or web trusses, you can reduce the time it takes to hang or relocate a bag by using a rope. Yacht braid is durable and holds fast. Any excess is coiled tightly in the suspension straps of the bag. Select an area directly below a ceiling member or existing eyebolt to hang a punching bag by using a rope.
Step 1
Stand an A-frame ladder below the ceiling member or existing eyebolt. Loop one end of a 1/2-inch yacht braid over a joist or the bottom cord of a web truss, or insert the end through the eyebolt.
Step 2
Pull the end of the rope below the ceiling member or the eyebolt and tie a bowline knot. A bowline is preferred because it holds fast and the loop doesn't slip. Allow the bowline to hang below ceiling height.
Step 3
Stand the punching bag in place below the ceiling member or the eyebolt. Pass the other end of the yacht braid through the suspension rings or the suspension straps on the top of the bag.
Step 4
Pull the end of the braid up and pass it through the loop in the bowline. Take up the slack and allow the end of the rope to drop to the floor.
Step 5
Ask an assistant to hold the punching bag at the preferred height. If an assistant is not available, stand the bag on a chair or milk crate. Pull the end of the rope tight to create tension.
Step 6
Pass the end of the rope through the suspension rings or straps a second time and secure it around the vertical section of braid above with three half hitches. To raise or lower the bag, loosen the hitches, reposition the bag the preferred height, tension the braid and tighten the hitches. It's not necessary to untie the bowline when moving the bag.
