Bathing instructions are the same for boy and girl infants, except in terms of the genitals. Because a girl infant has folds of skin around her genitals, feces, diaper cream or other residue may collect within the folds. Clean these areas thoroughly as any leftover substance within the folds can cause irritation to the skin. Choosing a freestanding bathtub makes this job easier. These tubs are specifically designed for bathing an infant; they cradle the infant with the cocoon-like shape, which may also make her feel safer during bath time.
Step 1
Fill the infant's bathtub with 2 to 3 inches of warm water. Check the temperature of the water with your hand; if it feels too hot to the touch, it is too hot for your baby.
Step 2
Hold your infant with one hand cupping her head and the other holding her bottom.
Step 3
Guide her body into the bathtub feet first and gently lower her head onto the headrest in the tub.
Step 4
Keep one hand on her body as you wash her. Continue to hold her head with your hand or arm and place your arm under her back to lift her on her side to wash her backside.
Step 5
Pour warm water over your baby continuously with a cup while you bathe her to keep her warm.
Step 6
Moisten a soft washcloth with water and wash each part of your baby gently starting with her face and every other body part, saving the dirtier body parts such as the genitals for last.
Step 7
Separate her vaginal lips gently with your fingers and wipe inside of her genitals down the middle from the front to the back where her anus is. With a separate wet washcloth, wipe the sides of the labia, or inner lips.
Step 8
Rinse her body with warm water until all soap residue is removed.
Step 9
Wrap her in a clean, thick, soft towel to keep her warm after her bath.
