Angular cheilitis, otherwise known as angular stomatitis, is an ailment that results in inflamed corners of the mouth. An article in the June 2007 issue of the Canadian Family Physician described a link between angular cheilitis and deficiencies in iron and B vitamins. Mineral and vitamin deficiencies may lead to fungal or bacterial growth that has the potential to worsen symptoms of angular cheilitis if left untreated. Herbal remedies are available to treat angular cheilitis.

Step 1

Consult your healthcare adviser before treating angular cheilitis via herbal remedies. Limited clinical studies exist regarding the efficacy of herbs as treatment aids for angular cheilitis. Furthermore, herbs may negatively interact with medications you may be taking or worsen symptoms of other medical conditions.

Step 2

Apply the gel of aloe vera to the infected site. Aloe vera will have a soothing affect on the skin and Mayo Clinic states that it may help improve skin wounds and lessen inflammation.

Step 3

Bill E. Cham, Ph.D., author of "The Eggplant Cancer Cure," explains that food products containing glycoalkaloids, such as eggplant, are beneficial for treating skin conditions, such as angular cheilitis. Cham recommends dicing an entire eggplant and soaking it in apple cider vinegar for an entire week. At the end of the week, the eggplant pieces may be discarded as the alkaloids will have leached into the vinegar. Apply the solution to the infected site.

Tips and Warnings

  • Increasing your daily consumption of food products containing B vitamins and iron may help treat angular cheilitis. Examples include liver, beef, salmon, tuna, milk, eggs and chicken.
