As snowboarding has continued to evolve, the sport has splintered into a multitude of riding styles. Slope-style riders are known for grabbing their boards while performing high-flying jumps. While the front end of the snowboard is commonly referred to as the nose, the back end is defined as the tail. The tail grab is a stylish yet simple maneuver that can be performed off numerous types of snowboarding ramps. The New York Times recommends grabbing the tail of the snowboard with your dominant hand.
Step 1
Wear a pair of snowboarding gloves to keep your hands protected from the sharpened edges of the board. Choose a snowboard ramp that allows you to jump at least 3 to 4 feet above the riding terrain. Approach the jump with a comfortable speed to ensure a balanced takeoff.
Step 2
Extend your arms while bending your knees to increase the stability of your snowboarding stance. Shift your body weight between the heel and toe edge of the snowboard as you near the ramp. Lean onto your back foot while climbing the takeoff jump.
Step 3
Raise the nose of the snowboard as you reach the apex of the ramp. Straighten your back leg to leap vertically off the tail of the snowboard. Elevate your knees as high as possible to increase the height of your jump.
Step 4
Lower your dominant hand to grab the tail of the snowboard. Rotate your other hand in a circular motion to maintain your balance while airborne. Point the nose of your snowboard toward the ground for extra style points.
Step 5
Release your grip from the tail of the snowboard as you begin to lose altitude. Keep the underside of your snowboard parallel to the ground while awaiting the landing. Bend your knees as your snowboard makes contact with the riding terrain.
