Since the conception of the sport, snowboarding has broken into a myriad of riding disciplines. While some snowboarders ride for exercise, others prefer the adrenaline rush of high-speed jumps. The kicker is a prominent design of the snowboard ramp which features an inclined construction. Most kickers feature a soft landing that has been covered with deep deposits of powdered snow. For novice riders, the Snow Professor recommends jumping a kicker that has a height of 1 to 2 feet.

Step 1

Wear a polycarbonate helmet when attempting any type of snowboard jump. Lower the helmet onto your head and buckle the safety straps under your chin. Shake your head from side to side to ensure the helmet features a snug, yet comfortable, fit.

Step 2

Lower your snowboard onto the slope about 50 feet away from the kicker. Secure your boots into the bindings of the snowboard. Rotate your snowboard until the front end points towards the base of the kicker.

Step 3

Bend your knees slightly as the snowboard glides towards the ramp. Extend your arms for balance as your momentum increases. Approach the kicker with a moderate speed to avoid overshooting the landing.

Step 4

Lean onto your back foot as the snowboard ascends the inclined kicker. Transfer your body weight onto the heel or toe edge of the snowboard. Lift your front foot as the nose of the snowboard nears the summit of the ramp.

Step 5

Extend your back leg to perform an aerial jump off the snowboard kicker. Pull your knees towards your chest to maximize your airtime. Lean forward to keep the underside of your snowboard parallel to the riding terrain.

Step 6

Lower your eyes to the snow to spot a safe landing. Bend your knees as the bottom of your snowboard touches down. Practice this basic kicker jump before moving on to more difficult maneuvers.
