Flagging energy is a state that hounds a busy populace. Splitting your time between work and responsibilities can seriously deplete your energy stores. It would be great if you could roll up to a fueling station like your car and top up your reserves, but it will take a more conscious effort on your part. Getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals regularly and having fun help, but adding a meditation practice to your daily routine will likely increase your energy measurably. Learning how to receive energy from meditation means practicing often and learning how to focus your attention on the present moment.
Step 1
Find a nice, warm place in your home that's reasonably quiet. Set a traditional meditation cushion or pillow on the floor. Sit down on it and bring your left foot against the cushion; place your right foot in the hollow of your left ankle. Let your knees splay out to the sides. Sit tall and square your shoulders. Rest your forearms on your upper thighs and place your hands on your knees with the palms facing upward. This pose invites energy to flow naturally into and through your being.
Step 2
Bring your attention to your breathing. It's not only where and the way you sit that will dictate how you receive energy from meditation; it's also how you breathe. Start by breathing normally. Don't try to control your rate of breathing by slowing it down. Let it flow naturally. If you find that difficult or are getting stressed, try inhaling to a count of three, holding your breath for one count and exhaling to a count of three. Make your inhales long and your exhales longer.
Step 3
Focus on the space between your thoughts. During the day, tens of thousands of errant thoughts invade your peace of mind. These thoughts have he potential to invade your meditation practice and sap your energy by taking you into endless rounds of worry sessions. Mentally swat them away when they pass through your consciousness. Deflect dark or negative emotions by bringing your attention back to your breath. Center your attention on the present moment.
Step 4
Practice meditation often. Allow at least 15 minutes twice per day or 20 to 30 minutes once per day for meditation. To receive the most energy from meditation you have to devote the time. If seated meditation lowers your energy because you become agitated or feel constricted, try a moving meditation like walking or yoga instead; either activity may help clear your mind and attract energy. Adopt the best practice for you. Feel free to switch between methods in accordance with your moods and needs.
