The toe-side carve is an essential technique that allows you to change the direction of the snowboard during downhill maneuvers. Riding on your toe edge helps to reduce of drag by preventing the underside of your board from making contact with the snow. To perform a fluid toe-side carve, you must be comfortable shifting your body weight between the edges of your snowboard. When riding on your toes, keep your head pointed in the direction you wish to travel, ABC-of-Snowboarding recommends.

Step 1

Choose an area on the mountain that features a mellow slope to practice your toe-side carve. Ride forward at a comfortable speed with your knees bent. Extend your arms out to your sides for increased balance.

Step 2

Lean forward to transfer your body weight onto the toe edge of your snowboard. Apply downward pressure to dig the edge of your board into the snow. Lift your front foot slightly to prevent the nose of the board from digging into the snow.

Step 3

Lean into the turn as you traverse the slope. Keep your shoulders parallel with the snowboard throughout the toe-side carve. Shift your body weight onto the opposing edge of the snowboard as you begin to lose momentum.
