The hot flashes associated with menopause can make you feel as if you are experiencing your own personal summer. Menopause is a normal part of your life that typically begins a few years before your menstrual cycle stops. Menopause leads to changes in your hormone levels of estrogen and progesterone. Along with hot flashes, these hormone fluctuations are responsible for symptoms such as vaginal dryness, disinterest in sex, mood swings, night sweats and sleep disturbances. Remifemin is an herbal supplement used to alleviate symptoms of menopause, and Remifemin Good Night is formulated to help with menopausal sleep issues. Consult your doctor before using Remifemin or Remifemin Good Night for menopause symptoms.

Black Cohosh Extract

The active ingredient in Remifemin and Remifemin Good Night is black cohosh. In Remifemin, black cohosh root and rhizome extract is standardized to 20 mg, and in Remifemin Good Night, it's standardized to 40 mg. Although black cohosh has a long history of use in treating hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states study results have not conclusively proven it's effective. Use products containing black cohosh only under the direct supervision of your physician.

Remifemin Ingredients

In addition to black cohosh, Remifemin also contains lactose, cellulose, potato starch, magnesium stearate and natural peppermint flavor. Remifemin contains no estrogen or ingredients that exhibit estrogen-like properties, such as soy. According to the Drugs.com, the usual dose is one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, and it may take 4 to 12 twelve weeks to see an improvement in symptoms. Consult your doctor for advice on how you should take Remifemin.

Remifemin Good Night Ingredients

Along with black cohosh, Remifemin Good Night also contains the additional active ingredients, in a 4-to-1 ratio each, valerian root extract, lemon balm leaf extract and hops strobile extract. Inactive ingredients in this product include cellulose, maltodextrin, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide color, soy lecithin, spirulina and carnauba wax. Valerian root appears to be an effective sleep aid. According to the University of Michigan Health System, valerian root used in combination with lemon balm and hops may help relieve sleep disturbances. Talk to your physician before using Remifemin Good Night for insomnia.

Precautions

There is some concern about the safety of the long-term use of black cohosh. Women taking black cohosh have developed liver failure and hepatitis. Don't use Remifemin, or any products containing black cohosh, if you have liver disease or a history of hormone-sensitive cancer. Inform your doctor about all the other medications and dietary supplements you are taking before treating symptoms of menopause with Remifemin or Remifemin Good Night.
