The violent, contact nature of football makes players susceptible to injuries, including ankle injuries. Ankle injuries or sprains are damage to the soft tissue and ligaments around the ankle, according to the Football Rescue website. The Joint Healing website notes that ankle sprains are graded on a one to three scale, with threes being the most severe injury. The precautions needed to come back and play football after an ankle injury depends on the severity of the injury.

Step 1

Wear an ankle brace or support to bolster the ankle and prevent it from being injured again. The brace supports the joint and prevents the ankle from rotating to lock the tendons in place, according to Football Rescue.

Step 2

Place sports insoles in your shoes to support the ankle. According to Football Rescue, insoles prevent overpronation to stabilize and support the joint.

Step 3

Tape your ankles before practice and play for added support. Some players prefer tape over braces because it is lighter and can be applied directly on the foot. For further support, tape can go over the socks and shoes if needed.

Step 4

Ice your ankles after practice and games to prevent swelling and to help them continue to heal. Sprained ankles are often weakened, so it is important to continue to rehab and strengthen the joint.
