In-home treadmills are convenient for squeezing in a cardiovascular workout when the weather is not cooperating, but they do require some routine maintenance and care. Speed and incline calibration is not a regularly scheduled maintenance task, but you may need to calibrate your machine in certain situations.
Identification
The treadmill calibration procedure typically resets the machine's speed and incline settings. The treadmill runs the belt and the incline ramp through the minimum and maximum settings. The procedure to activate the calibration mode is different among brands and models, but it usually involves using the magnetic safety key and pressing buttons in a specific order. Do not stand on the treadmill belt while it is calibrating; it changes speed and elevation quickly and unexpectedly.
Part Replacement
According to the Treadmill Doctor website, you need to calibrate your treadmill any time you replace a major electrical part. If you have a treadmill serviceman repair the machine for you, he should calibrate it after installing the new part. If you replace a part yourself, finish by calibrating the treadmill as outlined in the manufacturer's instructions. At the end of the procedure, the treadmill reports whether the calibration is successful. If it was not successful, you should contact the treadmill manufacturer.
Inconsistent Speed or Incline
You can fix some incline and speed problems by calibrating your treadmill. Try calibrating the treadmill if the belt speed is erratic, if the belt stops and resets, if the incline does not change or if the incline adjusts too slowly. This does not guarantee that calibration will fix the problem. A dry or improperly tensioned belt can cause erratic speeds. A damaged incline sensor or control board, meanwhile, can cause incline adjustment problems.
Considerations
Some manufacturers include calibration instructions in the owner's manual. Other manufacturers print the calibration instructions on the inside of the motor hood cover. You may need to contact your treadmill manufacturer for calibration instructions.
Follow the troubleshooting instructions in your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance. You may void the warranty on your treadmill if you open the motor hood cover or perform any unauthorized service on your machine.
