How To Work a Nike Sensor

The Nike+ sensor is a device designed for use with Apple Computer's iPod Nano and iPod Touch MP3 players. The sensor provides an array of features similar to those found in digital pedometers, such as the ability to track distances and determine your current pace. Data from each workout is stored on the MP3 player for later review. Nike produces a special line of shoes intended for use with the sensor, which feature a small compartment intended to hold the device.

Step 1

Connect the sensor unit to your iPod Nano or iPod Touch. If you are using an iPod Nano, plug the sensor unit's receiver into the matching port located at the bottom of the MP3 player. If you are using an iPod Touch, turn on the device, tap the "Settings" icon and toggle the "Nike + iPod" setting to "On;" the iPod Touch does not require use of a separate receiver unit.

Step 2

Insert the sensor unit into the matching compartment located in the insole of your left shoe; the compartment is hidden underneath a foam insert. Put on the shoes and tie the laces.

Step 3

Select the "Nike + iPod" option from your device's main menu; if you are using an iPod Nano, select the "New Workout" option. Review the available workout options. Select "Basic" to begin an open-ended workout. Select "Time" to begin a workout with a limited duration. Select "Distance" to begin a workout with a limited travel distance. Select "Weight" to begin a workout with a target number of burned calories.

Step 4

Review the available audio options. Select "Now Playing" to begin the workout with the currently-selected song playing. Select "Playlists" to choose a saved playlist for playback. Select "Shuffle Songs" to play back all of the songs in your library in random order. Select "None" to begin the workout without any music playing.

Step 5

Press the center button or tap the option labeled "Play" start the workout program. Begin your walking or running workout. Examine the MP3 player's display to review the total distance you have traveled, your current pace and which song is currently playing; alternatively, press the center or "Home" button to hear an audio message containing this information.

Step 6

Complete your workout. Press the "Play/pause" button, followed by the "Menu" button, if you are using the iPod Nano. Press the "End Workout" button if you are using the iPod Touch. Select the option labeled "End Workout."

Tips and Warnings

  • When you first use the Nike+ sensor, you will have to calibrate the device according to your running or walking pace; use a route with a known distance for your first workout and select the "Calibrate" option after you have finished.
