A freshly made cake can start to dry out quickly if it's left out uncovered. If you want to make a cake one day and serve it the next, you can follow a few tips to keep the cake as fresh and moist as possible. Depending on whether or not you've frosted the cake, you can wrap it up tightly to lock in moisture and keep it from becoming dry and stale before its unveiling.

Step 1

Cover cut slices of cake tightly with plastic wrap, then refrigerate the slices to keep them fresh overnight.

Step 2

Place a cut cake in a sealed cake container. Set an apple slice in the container with the cake to help keep the cake moist. Place the container in the refrigerator overnight.

Step 3

Wrap an unfrosted cake in plastic wrap or aluminum foil tightly. Store the wrapped cake at room temperature overnight before frosting.

Step 4

Cover a frosted cake in wax paper, which will not stick to the frosting the way plastic wrap or aluminum foil will. Tape the wax paper to the cake plate to cover the cake completely. Store the frosted cake overnight in the refrigerator.
