Daily walks give you regular cardiovascular exercise to fulfill exercise requirements for a healthy body. Because it is a weight-bearing form of fitness, you also strengthen your bones as you improve your cardiovascular health and muscle strength. Walking the same route day after day gets boring for many people. Change up your walking habits to keep the walks interesting. If you keep yourself excited about walking, you're more likely to stick with the routine for regular physical benefits.
Step 1
Walk a different route than normal to give yourself new scenery to enjoy. Take different streets or take a walk in a nearby natural area, such as a forest or on a beach.
Step 2
Join a walking club, start your own walking club or walk with a friend. Exercising with someone gives you the chance to socialize and motivate each other as you walk. Put the word out to neighbors, friends and colleagues that you're looking for walking partners.
Step 3
Challenge yourself by walking longer distances or up large hills. If you feel up to it, add short jogging bursts in the middle of your walk for more of an aerobic challenge.
Step 4
Participate in a walk-a-thon or similar walking event within the community. Use your daily walks as training to build up your endurance. The atmosphere of walking events often is exciting and motivating to keep you on track with walking regular after the event is over.
Step 5
Listen to music while you walk. Take along an MP-3 player and choose music that motivates you and has a steady rhythm to keep your feet moving.
Step 6
Walk your dog to enjoy the company of your canine friend. If you don't have a dog, volunteer to walk dogs at a local animal shelter or for an elderly neighbor.
Step 7
Play games in your head as you walk. For example, count the number of red cars you see, make up stories in your head about other walkers you see or conduct a mental scavenger hunt in which you look for different objects.
