Apple cider vinegar has been shown in studies to help lower the glycemic impact of meals for those diagnosed with diabetes. A 2007 study published in "BMC Gastroenterology" looked at 10 patients with type I diabetes and found that drinking 200 ml of water mixed with 30 ml of apple cider vinegar showed a statistically significant decrease in their gastric emptying rate and reduced the glycemic impact of their meal. Another study, published in 2010 in the "European Journal of Clinical Nutrition" looked at 16 patients with type II diabetes and found that the administration of vinegar with high glycemic value meals reduced the glucose levels.

Step 1

Measure out 30 ml of apple cider vinegar and add to a glass. This equates to about 6 tsp.

Step 2

Add 200 ml of water to the vinegar. This is just below one cup.

Step 3

Drink the apple cider vinegar and water mixture before or during a meal in which the glycemic value is high.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you cannot tolerate the taste of the apple cider vinegar in water, consider having a salad with an oil-and-vinegar dressing to achieve similar results. Other sources, such as the website Earth Clinic, suggest drinking 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar mixed with 16 oz. of water. You can adjust your amount of vinegar based on your blood sugar results and the direction of your physician.
  • Do not drink the apple cider vinegar mixture with meals that are low in glycemic value, as it can reduce the amount of glucose you receive too drastically. Always monitor your blood sugar to make sure it is within optimal ranges. If the amount of vinegar is too much, try reducing the amount mixed with your water when making the mixture. Always consult with your physician before making any changes to the regulation of your blood sugar.
