Senna tea is an herbal beverage frequently used for its laxative qualities. Linked with reduced symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids and constipation, senna is an FDA-approved nonprescription laxative that is sometimes recommended as an herbal alternative to other laxative products. While generally considered healthy in small dosages, senna leaf tea can lead to negative side effects such as dehydration and a depletion of electrolytes due to excessive bowel movements.

Definition

Senna leaf tea is an herbal remedy made from steeping ½ to 2 g of dried senna leaf in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. While both the leaf and fruit of the senna plant have a similar laxative quality, the fruit is considered to be gentler on the gastrointestinal tract. Individuals suffering from constipation sometimes drink senna leaf tea to accelerate the rate at which waste is moved through the gastrointestinal tract.

Bowel Irregularity

Individuals who take senna may experience stomach discomfort, cramps and diarrhea. Consistent senna consumption for two weeks or longer can cause the bowels to stop functioning normally due to laxative dependence. Long-term consumption can also have an altering effect on the balance of electrolytes and other chemicals in the blood, potentially leading to heart function disorders, liver damage or muscle weakness. Individuals who already suffer from electrolyte disturbances, potassium deficiency, dehydration, diarrhea or loose stools should avoid senna, as it may cause a worsening of their symptoms.

Side Effects

A variety of risks and side effects have been linked to senna consumption, including severe stomach pain, diarrhea, watery stool, weight loss, enlargement of fingers and toes, confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, jaundice, nausea, itching, loss of appetite and muscle weakness. Allergic reactions to the herb may include hives and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

Safety Considerations

Talk to your doctor about the possible risks and ramifications of taking senna leaf tea. Although some people prefer to prepare their own teas of the bulk herb, many tea manufacturers offer prepackaged senna tea bags that contain a consistent dosage and may reduce your risk of consuming unhealthy dosages.
