How to Light a Propane Barbecue Grill

How to Light a Propane Barbecue Grill. Get ready for the barbecue season. If you have just bought your first propane grill, you probably feel like you are in the lap of luxury. It is important, however, to learn to light your gas grill properly. Follow these steps and you'll be ready to cook.

Become familiar with the manufacturer's safety instructions. Inspect the setup to ensure proper connection between the propane tank and grill.

Look at the front of your gas grill and locate the igniter button. Open the grill cover and make sure the heat deflector is in place and allows access to light the burner.

Start a burner with the knob on your grill. This allows the propane gas to start moving toward the burner connected to that knob. Set the temperature anywhere from "low" to "high" to match your cooking needs.

Press the igniter button to start a flame. If the igniter doesn't work, turn off the gas and wait a few minutes for the air to clear. Turn on the gas again and use a manual barbecue lighter to light the grill burner. Hold it up to the burner and press to light. This product is available in many retail stores.

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 when lighting all subsequent burners, once the first burner has been lit.

Close the grill lid and allow the heat to build up for a few minutes before cooking your food.

Turn the burner knobs to the "off" position when you're finished cooking. Be sure the cylinder valve on the propane tank is set to "off," as well.
