Current wedding day traditions suggest keeping the top tier of the wedding cake to eat on the couple's first wedding anniversary. Proper freezer storage of the cake is critical to ensuring the cake stays edible as long as one year. If the cake is not wrapped adequately, it may also experience freezer burn while it's stored in the freezer. Sealing the cake tightly with several layers of protection ensures the cake stays as fresh as the day you froze it.

Step 1

Remove any decorations from the cake, unless the decorations are made from icing.

Step 2

Place the cake on a baking sheet or a piece of cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil.

Step 3

Put the cake in the freezer for one hour to harden.

Step 4

Remove the cake from the freezer.

Step 5

Wrap the cake tightly with plastic wrap. Completely enclose the plastic wrap around the cake to keep it airtight.

Step 6

Cover the plastic wrap with two layers of aluminum foil. Tightly wrap each layer around the cake and seal the edges.

Step 7

Place the wrapped cake in an airtight, covered container or in a bakery box.

Step 8

Place the container in the freezer and store the cake for up to one year.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use a vacuum sealer and the storage bags recommended for the sealer to remove all the air from around the cake before freezing it.
  • If the cake has a filling, the filling may separate during freezing.
