Wrinkles around the mouth form for a number of reasons. Smokers are at a high risk for developing wrinkles in the area, but everybody can develop them. As you age, collagen production decreases. As a result, the skin loses elasticity and the ability to bounce back to its natural place. Repeated movements such as smiling can then lead to permanent lines. A 2009 study published in the "Aesthetic Surgery Journal" shows that women are more likely than men to develop facial wrinkles. Luckily, there are ways to get rid of wrinkles or lessen their appearance
Step 1
Try laser skin resurfacing. Laser works best for fine lines and you will need several treatments before you can see a significant difference. Some types of lasers burn the upper layer of the skin, while others only stimulate the skin and accelerate the production of collagen and elastin. Ask your doctor which type of laser treatment is best for you.
Step 2
Talk to your doctor about dermal fillers. The newest injectable fillers include hyaluronic acid and other artificial materials that are safer to use, even for those who are sensitive or have allergies. Fillers work well for deep lines, because the fillers can help plump out the area. Effects last several months, until your body absorbs the material and you have to get a new injection.
Step 3
Ask about dermabrasion and chemical peels. Both procedures get rid of the upper layer of your skin, taking the wrinkles along at the same time. Mild chemical peels leave only a slight redness, but deep peels and dermabrasion can cause severe redness and swelling. As new skin grows, it will look younger and fresh.
Tips and Warnings
- Give Botox a pass. Although Botox works well for wrinkles on the forehead or around the eyes, it's not a good option for wrinkles around the mouth. Botox paralyzes the muscles, which wouldn't look natural in the mouth area.
