As your belly expands, your regular clothing gets pushed to the back of the closet in favor of maternity clothes. If clothes that resemble a tent come to mind, rethink your strategy for maternity clothes shopping. Wear stylish clothes that show off your figure and make you feel good about yourself during your pregnancy.

Know What You Need

Shop with a plan for the type of maternity clothing you need. If you already own maternity clothes, or borrowed clothes from someone else, sort through the items and take inventory. Consider the activities you regularly engage in, such as exercise or formal events. If you work outside the home, list clothing pieces that fit the dress code. Use this information to determine the type of clothing you should purchase.

Build from Basics

The pregnancy may seem like a long time when your abdomen continues growing, but the period is relatively short. Instead of buying a huge wardrobe you won't need for long, focus on a core wardrobe with versatile pieces that work for different purposes. Choose classic styles in colors that won't go out of fashion quickly. This allows you to reuse the clothing for future pregnancies. Seek maternity clothes that work for different purposes. For example, choose a skirt that fits the corporate dress code yet pairs with a dressy shirt you can wear for a formal event. Accessories like jewelry, new shoes or scarves let you add your style to the basic pieces.

Try It On

Your body's changes may make clothing fit differently. Your pre-pregnancy size isn't always the same size you wear in maternity clothes. Like regular garments, maternity clothes vary in sizing. Trying on the items allows you to get the proper size and ensure items fit well. Choose styles that are somewhat fitted to show your body's shape -- rather than hanging clothes that lack shape or definition. Notice the comfort level of the clothing when you try it on. Avoid overly tight clothes that don't let you breathe or move well.

Find Bargains

Save money on your maternity clothes, when possible, to make them a better value for the short time you'll wear them. Shop the clearance racks at your favorite clothing stores and at maternity clothing shops. Seek a secondhand shop that sells maternity clothes to get discounted outfits. Garage sales are another option for cheaper maternity clothes.
