Indigestion can strike after a heavy, rich or fatty meal, during stressful times or because of other bodily or environmental reasons. Indigestion is characterized by a burning sensation near the heart or an uncomfortably full feeling. It is caused when food and stomach acid finds its way back through the stomach valve into the esophagus. Fortunately, you may find some relief from indigestion by drinking herbal teas, water and baking soda.

Step 1

Drink a glass of warm water before, during and after a heavy meal to reduce the likelihood of indigestion. Avoid cold water and other drinks because they force the stomach to work harder to digest food. Hot water, by itself or with a squeeze of lemon, helps to strengthen the digestive system and may relieve discomfort due to indigestion.

Step 2

Boil 8 to 10 ozs. of water and steep 1 tsp. of a digestion-calming herbal tea. Chamomile, peppermint and ginger tea have all been known to aid digestion and reduce indigestion. Chamomile and ginger tea are both safe to use during pregnancy, but peppermint tea should be avoided. Drink as many cups of herbal tea as desired whenever you experience side effects of indigestion.

Step 3

Mix 1 tsp. baking soda powder in 8 ozs. of warm water. Drink as needed when you experience indigestion. The alkaline baking soda helps to neutralize stomach acid in the esophagus. If you are on a low-sodium diet, speak to your doctor first before using baking soda.
