How to Exfoliate Blackheads on the Legs at Home

Blackheads on the legs can be unsightly, stubborn and downright annoying. Blackheads occur when the skin produces too much oil and sebum. The oil clogs the pores and, when it comes into contact with oxygen, turns black. The most common place to find blackheads is on the face -- especially the nose -- but it is not uncommon for blackheads to show up on other parts of the body, such as the legs, back and chest. Exfoliating -- removing the top layer of dead skin cells -- is one way to encourage blackheads to get lost.

Step 1

Exfoliate your skin two to three times per week with a dry natural-bristle exfoliating brush. Before showering and while the skin is still dry, brush the skin of the legs with broad, sweeping, upward strokes. Work your way from the base of the legs to the tops of the thighs. Dry brushing exfoliates the skin, removing the top layer of dead skin cells, unclogging pores and stimulating blood circulation. Bringing more blood to the skin's surface can help the circulatory system remove waste clogging the pores. If you have sensitive skin, trade the bristle brush for a dry wash cloth.

Step 2

Wash your legs with an exfoliating scrub formulated for the body. Alternatively, make your own body scrub using all-natural ingredients. "Beauty: The New Basics" recommends mixing 1 cup of oatmeal with 4 tbsp. of water into a thick paste. Massage your legs with the exfoliating paste, working the paste into the pores.

Step 3

Rinse your legs with warm water and moisturize if necessary.

Tips and Warnings

  • If the blackhead problem persists, consider using a topical acne lotion that has benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as the main ingredient.
  • Do not pick or scratch blackheads. This may cause scarring or further infection.
