Cupcakes are a delectable treat for birthdays, holidays or when you simply want to satisfy your sweet tooth. These individual cakes stay fresh for several days at room temperature as long as they are in an airtight container. Keep your cupcakes fresher longer by storing them in the freezer. Cupcakes last up to three months in the freezer, and when they thaw, they taste just as fresh as they did the day you baked them.
Step 1
Arrange the cupcakes on a cookie sheet. Place the cookie sheet in the freezer for one hour to harden the frosting.
Step 2
Remove the cupcakes from the freezer after the hour. Press a toothpick in the center of each cupcake and keep at least 1 inch exposed. The toothpick will protect the frosting during freezing.
Step 3
Wrap each cupcake individually with a tight piece of plastic wrap. Then wrap each cupcake in aluminum foil.
Step 4
Slide the wrapped cupcakes into a large freezer bag. Seal the freezer bag and place it on a shelf in the freezer.
Tips and Warnings
- Remove the cupcakes from the freezer bag and unwrap the plastic wrap and aluminum foil before thawing. After unwrapping, place the cupcakes in an airtight container inside the refrigerator overnight. Remove the cupcakes the following day and serve at room temperature. If your cupcakes do not contain icing, refrigeration before freezing and the use of toothpicks is unnecessary.
- Do not store the cupcakes before hardening the frosting. Doing so will crush the decorative frosting.
