Wheezing is an irregularity in the respiratory system that deserves attention. The general mechanism of wheezing is that the airways somewhere in the respiratory system are becoming restricted, reducing your ability to bring in oxygen. In extreme situations, this can be very threatening to your health, even leading to blackouts or asphyxiation. If you have asthma or other outdoor allergies, you need to be prepared for the effects of exercising to prevent wheezing and other ailments from developing.

Step 1

Drink plenty of water throughout the day leading up to the workout. Water helps keep the airways moist and healthy, and reduces stress placed on the airways.

Step 2

Take any allergy and/or asthma medications prescribed or recommended by your doctor. Allergy pills are common for people who suffer from outdoor allergies, and many people with asthma take an oral medication to control their asthma and reduce attacks.

Step 3

Use your inhaler prior to exercise if your doctor has recommended doing so. The medication in an inhaler relaxes the airways in the respiratory system, opening them and reducing the risk of wheezing and asthma attacks.

Step 4

Begin exercising only if you are experiencing no signs of wheezing or an asthma attack. If you start to exercise when the respiratory system seems irritated or restricted, your chances of starting to wheeze while running are high.

Step 5

Stop exercising if you experience tightening in the airways or difficulty breathing. If rest does not calm down your airways, use an inhaler to relax them and discontinue your workout.

Things You'll Need
