Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients that your body needs to function properly. Most vitamins and minerals can be found in food, but some people choose to take a multivitamin to ensure that they are getting the nutrients they need. Multivitamins come in different forms, and some contain iron, calcium or other minerals along with vitamins. Although water is recommended when taking a multivitamin, some people prefer to drink milk with a multivitamin to help prevent an upset stomach.

Step 1

Take your multivitamin with water if possible to help your body absorb the vitamins easier. Drugs.com states that taking vitamins with dairy products, including milk, may make it harder for your body to absorb certain ingredients contained in the multivitamin.

Step 2

Ensure that your multivitamin does not contain iron. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the calcium in milk can interfere with your body's absorption of iron.

Step 3

Drink a whole glass of milk when taking multivitamins. Milk helps some people swallow pills. It is important to drink the entire glass to make certain that the vitamin does not get lodged in your throat. Milk can also help if you get an upset stomach when taking vitamins.

Step 4

Take your iron supplement separately with water. If you need iron, New York State Department of Health recommends taking it at least two hours before or after you have consumed your milk.
