Performing a ski jump and skiing away clean is a breathtaking experience. To begin ski jumping, choose a jump with a landing that has a downward slope rather than a flat landing, advises HuckZone.com, a freestyle skiing website. With a few techniques such as bending your knees correctly and spotting your landing, you can land a jump when you're skiing.

Step 1

Approach the ski jump with your weight slightly forward and your knees bent.

Step 2

Balance your weight over the middle of your skis, extend your legs and spring evenly off the lip of the jump.

Step 3

Tuck your legs and lean forward in the air.

Step 4

Look down and spot your landing.

Step 5

Extend your body for the landing, balance your weight over the middle of your skis and keep your knees flexed.

Step 6

Touch down the back of your skis on the landing slope and bring your skis flat to the snow.

Step 7

Compress your body to absorb the landing impact. Lean forward, bend your knees and let your legs come up to your chest.

Step 8

Slowly stand up and ski away clean.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not rotate from the takeoff of the jump, because even a small rotation will have a large effect when you come to land, advises the Mechanics of Sport website.
  • Ski jumping comes with the risk of knee and head injuries. Be sure to wear a helmet when skiing.

Things You'll Need
