Relying on Earth's magnetic field, a magnetic compass can help you find your way. Earth's magnetic field dips at a 90-degree angle in the Northern Hemisphere at the north magnetic pole, which draws the magnetized, cobalt steel needle within the compass. The plastic capsule of the compass contains a crystal-clear fluid that stabilizes the metal needle, ensuring a precise north compass bearing. With proper care, this fine instrument will offer a lifetime of accuracy.
Step 1
Store the magnetic compass in the upright position on a level surface. A level surface ensures that the magnetic compass needle is always able to move without restriction.
Step 2
Keep the magnetic compass away from magnets, steel or iron objects, and electronic devices such as cell phones and radio speakers. All of these objects interfere with needle accuracy and polarity, causing permanent damage with prolonged exposure.
Step 3
Clean the compass to keep it free of dirt and debris using a clean, damp cloth. Wipe the exterior of the compass with the damp cloth and buff it dry afterward with a second clean cloth.
Step 4
Avoid high temperatures when using or storing the magnetic compass. Heat that reaches or exceeds 120 degrees Fahrenheit might cause the compass's capsule to expand, resulting in leaking.
Step 5
Protect the compass from direct sunlight by covering it with a piece of light colored cloth. Repeated exposure to direct sunlight might cause irreparable damage to the compass.
Tips and Warnings
- Refrain from wearing a pocket knife, watch, gun or metal belt buckle when using a magnetic compass. These items attract the magnet in the compass, resulting in erroneous needle readings.
- Do not handle the magnetic compass if you have any type of grease, oil or insect repellent on your hands. These chemicals cloud the exterior and remove the markings from the surface. Never clean a magnetic compass with an abrasive cleaner or solvent that has a petroleum base. Those substances can melt the plastic capsule.
