Ski boots may be seen more as a comfort item, but they play a huge role in your performance when skiing. Ski boots that are sized improperly or unsuitable for your skis and bindings can lead to more falls and less reliable riding. For this reason, experts recommend getting fitted for boots and making sure the equipment is ideal for you.

Fit

Ski boots need to fit properly to improve your handling of the skis and accuracy when riding. Space between the walls of the boot and your foot can cause delays in the response time of the skis -- the looser the skis are, the slower and less accurate your turning will be. This can slow you down and lead to poor angles taken on the course.

Bindings

Bindings can influence ski performance, and since you can't choose them without knowing what type of boots you have, the boot selection becomes important for this feature as well. The width of the bindings can worsen your performance if they extend far out from the edge of the skis. Some bindings have adjustable sizing, and more expensive models feature anti-friction devices on the side to keep the bindings from slowing you down. When choosing your boots, consider the options you have in terms of bindings and what advantages or disadvantages a boot may offer for bindings.

Comfort

Even if the technical parameters of a ski boot are ideal for you, the comfort may be horrible. If your foot is getting worn raw by ill-fitting or rough parts of the boot it could lead to blistering and shorten your time spent on the slopes. The boots also may feature poor insulation that chills your feet quickly and keeps you from spending long chunks of time on the slopes. Make sure you are comfortable in your boots before you make an investment in them.

Considerations

The best way to choose ski boots is to go to a ski specialty shop where the boots can be fitted under the guise of a professional. Unless you are experienced with ski equipment, it can be difficult to understand the various features of a boot and how they might affect your skiing performance.
