Scars are a natural result of some kind of injury to your skin. They can occur because of surgery, accidental injury, acne or infection. As your skin heals, the area can become thickened, raised and discolored, resulting in a permanent scar. Some scars fade with time, but most remain visible. There are things you can do before a scar develops to minimize its severity. If you already have a scar, you can take steps to decrease the visibility of it.

Step 1

Clean injuries immediately to reduce the risk of infection. Infections can make scarring worse. If you had surgery, follow your doctor's instructions about keeping it clean.

Step 2

Apply antibiotic ointment to your injury and cover it with a bandage. Apply more ointment and change the bandage daily until the wound is healed. Follow your doctor's orders about changing the dressing and applying ointment if you have a surgical incision.

Step 3

Avoid picking at the scab over your injury or incision so that it heals cleanly.

Step 4

Wear sunscreen and avoid excessive exposure to the sun when you have a fresh scar. Sunlight can darken or discolor your scar, making it more visible.

Step 5

Ask your doctor about rubbing vitamin E cream or ointment on an injury or fresh scar. This may help minimize the scar, but some people are allergic to vitamin E creams and ointments.

Step 6

Apply an over-the-counter scar reducing cream. If your scar is severe, talk to your doctor about prescription creams.

Step 7

Consult your dermatologist about laser resurfacing, which removes the scar tissue without damaging the skin around it, or surgical scar removal options.

Step 8

Use makeup to cover scars, especially small ones on your face. Apply a thin layer of foundation with a sponge to the entire area. Use a concealer that closely matches your skin tone to cover the scar; blend the concealer into the foundation well so there is no visible line. Dust your face with a translucent powder or one that matches your skin tone to set the makeup and help keep it from wearing off.
