An ancient Japanese martial art, jujitsu traces back more than 2,000 years to the legendary samurai. Jujitsu features grappling, joint locks and various body throws, providing the inspiration for martial arts like judo and aikido. During the 20th century, Brazilian master Helio Gracie added to traditional jujitsu, incorporating an extensive array of ground techniques that have come to define the fighting style.

Kimura

After achieving a side mount position, in which you're lying sideways atop your opponent's chest, use your right hand to secure your opponent's left wrist down by his side. While pinning the captured wrist to the ground, reach your left arm underneath your opponent's left shoulder and clasp your own right wrist. Now use the combined strength of your two arms to crank your opponent's trapped left arm backwards and up. You may step over his head with your left leg to gain more cranking leverage.

Americana

Another arm-lock submission from the side mount, the Americana starts once you've captured your opponent's left wrist up near his head, so the captured wrist is above the elbow and not below the elbow like in a kimura. Pin your opponent's left wrist to the ground with your left hand and reach your right arm beneath his left arm to secure a grip on your left wrist. Now crank the trapped arm, lifting your right elbow while pushing with your left hand to bend your opponent's forearm backward at a painful angle.

Arm-Bar

An arm-bar can end a fight quickly without warning. From the mount position, place your right hand on your prone opponent's chest. Wrap your left arm around the outside of your opponent's extended right arm and grab your right hand. You've now isolated your opponent's right arm. Hop to your feet and spin sideways to sit on your opponent's chest, draping your left leg over his face and your right leg across his stomach. Now sit backwards, dropping your shoulders to the ground and yanking down on the opponent's captured right arm. Raise your hips off the ground to apply pressure on the elbow joint.

Heel Hook

If your opponent gets careless with his legs, capture his left foot under your right armpit. Place your right elbow on the bottom of the foot and press your right forearm against the inside of the foot, effectively trapping the heel. Now reach around with your left arm to grab your right hand. Pulling your hands to the left will twist the foot and torque the knee, gaining a submission.
