A highly regarded vegetable, both for its taste and nutritional value, the distinct flavor of asparagus makes it ideal to include in numerous dishes, casseroles, soups and stews. You can easily use asparagus that is frozen in place of fresh in a recipe or as a side dish. The key to making frozen vegetables taste fresh and not soggy is to avoid overcooking them; most often vegetables are partially cooked soon after they are harvested and before freezing. Therefore, the cooking and preparation time would be less than if the asparagus were fresh.
Step 1
Place ½ cup water into a pan and bring it to a boil on the stove.
Step 2
Open the frozen asparagus package and measure out the amount that you wish to cook.
Step 3
Place the asparagus into the boiling water. Bring the water back to a boil, reduce the heat to simmer and cover the pot.
Step 4
Cook the frozen asparagus until it is completely thawed and hot all the way through. Avoid overcooking the asparagus, which can result in soggy vegetables, by checking and tasting it after about four minutes of cooking, and approximately every 30 to 60 seconds thereafter.
Step 5
Drain the asparagus by pouring it into a colander. Use as directed in your dish or serve while hot.
