Hemp food products are gaining popularity in supermarkets across America. The nutritional benefits of non-drug varieties of plants from the Cannabis genus, commonly referred to as hemp, have received increasing attention in recent years. According to Hemphasis, hemp is the only food capable of supplying all of man's dietary needs with reference to protein, essential amino acids and essential fatty acids.
Essential Amino Acids Present in Hemp
Hemp is a comprehensive source of protein containing all eight essential amino acids: leucine, lysine, threoine, phen+tyro, valine, meeth+cyst, isoleucin and tryptophan. Moreover, these amino acids are present in greater quantities in hemp than alternative sources of protein, such as egg whites, tofu and cow's milk. Hemp also favors the production of two other amino acids, the albumin and globulins serums, which are necessary to sustain human life.
Digestibility of Hemp
While hemp has a lower protein content than soy, its protein is more easily digestible because of the presence of the globular proteins, albumin and edistin, whose structure closely resembles that of the protein produced by human blood. The absence of trypsin inhibitors, oligosaccharides and antinutrients found in other source of food ensures that hemp protein is absorbed without complication.
Omega Ratio of Hemp
Health authorities believe that humans should ingest essential fatty acids in an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 4 to 1. Most human fat intake in America is currently derived from common seed oil and animal fat, which are both scarce in omega-3. This results in an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 10 to 1 or greater. Hemp nut and oil, in contrast, offers an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 3 to 1 or less, providing a much needed counterweight to an otherwise unbalanced diet.
Health Conditions Improved by Hemp
The essential fatty acids contained in hemp are one of the human body's main defenses against disease and illness. Hemp is therefore believed to relieve a range of health conditions, including addiction, arthritis, attention deficit disorder, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, constipation, diabetes, diarrhea, earache, edema, fatigue, immune deficiency, menopuase, obesity, osteroporosis, premenstrual syndrome, tuberculosis, athersclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. It also relieves skin conditions such as eczema, neurodermititis and psoriasis.
