1. Most Common Breast Augmentation Risk
Capsular contracture is a naturally occurring risk of breast augmentation surgery. The scar tissue, left behind from surgery, sometimes shrinks around the implant. This can cause hardening of the breast and pain. Surgery corrects capsular contracture. However, in severe cases, removal of the implant is required.
2. Implant Ruptures Cause Big Problems
The longer an implant is in the body, the more likely it will rupture. This is one reason doctors recommend replacing breast implants every 10 to 15 years. A severe blow to the chest, such as a car accident, can also cause a breast implant to rupture. When a saline implant ruptures, the breast goes noticeably flat. When a silicone breast implant ruptures, it may be several weeks, months or even years before a patient notices, since the body doesn't absorb the silicone gel. There is conflicting medical evidence that ruptured silicone implants cause severe health problems in women.
3. It May Leave you Looking Lopsided or Wrinkled
You may find your breasts uneven following a breast augmentation surgery. In this case, revision surgery is necessary to correct it. Be sure to ask your plastic surgeon about his policy regarding revision surgery. You don't want to have to pay twice for a surgeon's mistake. Patients with thin breast tissue may show wrinkles from silicone breast implants. Other skin and chest irregularities include scars and excessive skin. These risks, while not usually life threatening, are unattractive. They may decease over time or require revision surgery.
4. Implants may Move Around
Implants don't always stay put. A breast implant can shift out of its original position and cause pain and distortion in the breast. Revision surgery may be able to put the implant back in the right spot. However, removal of the implant is sometimes necessary.
5. Surgery Holds Many Breast Augmentation Risks
Breast augmentation surgery carries many risk including scarring, bleeding and even death. Following surgery, some women experience changes in breast sensation, blood clots or fluid accumulation. In addition to risks to the breast, you're also at risk for general surgery risks like blood clots and infection. Your plastic surgeon should go over all the possible risks with you and answer any questions you may have during your consultation.
