Braces are a rite of passage for most children in the U.S., and although orthodontic practices have improved greatly in the last 20 years, most children still experience minor discomfort. Offer over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate pain and swelling, or use natural remedies, such as salt water rinses and improved oral hygiene.
Proper Hygiene
Pay extra attention to your child's oral hygiene while he is wearing braces. Food that gets caught in the braces can quickly cause tooth decay or gum disease. Swollen gums are usually a sign of improper brushing. Brush the teeth gently after each meal and rinse with a warm salt water rinse or mouth wash, such as Peroxyl, says Dr. Sarkis Euksuzian of Euksuzian Orthodontics in Medford, New Jersey.
Dietary Changes
Some foods are more likely to stick in braces or damage wires than others, potentially causing swollen gums. Teach your child to avoid sticky foods, such as caramel, gum and soft, chewy candy, as well as hard foods, such as bagels, pizza crusts, nuts or ice cubes. Cut apples, carrots, pizza and other crunchy foods into small pieces before eating.
Considerations
Although children may experience sore teeth while wearing braces, swollen gums are not considered normal, according to Euksuzian. Improved oral hygiene usually alleviates swollen gums, but if the condition worsens or is accompanied by bleeding gums, consult your orthodontist.
Other Factors
Most children experience some mouth soreness when braces are first installed, as well as when the braces are tightened. This discomfort usually lasts only a few days. Braces can also rub against the lips or the inside of the mouth, causing chafing and sores. Rub a bit of wax on the braces to reduce friction. Push loose or irritating wires back into place or consult your orthodontist to replace broken wires, which can irritate the gums or mouth.
