Detox diets are based on the theory that unhealthy chemicals and compounds build up in people's systems, causing illness, fatigue and weight gain. By eating only natural, healthy foods for a short period of time, people can flush these chemicals out of their bodies and essentially reset their systems. Some detox diets forbid eating meat or dairy for days or weeks, so people following those plans must find other sources of protein. Many detox diets encourage using brown rice as a protein because it is relatively low on the glycemic index and high in fiber.

Step 1

Mix brown rice protein powder into smoothies instead of dairy products, soy protein or other ingredients your detox diet forbids. Adding protein to a fruit- or vegetable-based meal such as a smoothie makes it more satisfying and helps keeps your blood sugar even.

Step 2

Toss cold brown rice into salads to add substance, fiber and protein to your meal. Dress the salad with lemon juice, flaxseed oil or other seasonings permitted on your diet.

Step 3

Cook brown rice with vegetables, ginger and garlic for a flavorful dinner. Drink a mug of uncaffeinated herbal tea after your meal.

Step 4

Sweeten beverages with brown rice syrup instead of sugar or an artificial sweetener. This syrup is low on the glycemic index and is naturally derived, and most detox diets permit it.

Step 5

Cut processed foods, gluten, dairy, meat, starches, artificial ingredients, alcohol and caffeine from your diet. Follow this system for three to seven days. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables; drink eight cups of water per day; and incorporate avocado, flaxseed oil and raw nuts to make sure you are getting enough calories.
