Three muscles operate the upper eyelid -- the levator, frontalis and Muller's muscle. Each of these muscles has different functions that time and gravity can affect, causing your upper eyelids to droop and sag. You exercise the muscles in your arms, legs and torso to keep them toned and firmed, and you can also target the upper eyelid muscles. Rather than face the plastic surgeon's knife, exercise the muscles in your face and around your eyes to tighten the skin on your upper eyelids.

Step 1

Position the sides of your index fingers on your brow bones, the area directly beneath your eyebrows. Lift your eyebrows by gently pushing your fingers up toward your forehead.

Step 2

Close your eyes four or five seconds while maintaining the upward pressure with your fingers. Repeat at least 10 times to help firm the eyelids and the muscles around the eyes.

Step 3

Leave your fingers on your brow bone and use light pressure to push your fingers down toward your cheekbones. While holding your fingers in this position, try to lift both eyebrows toward the ceiling. Repeat the exercise at least 10 times to continue to work the muscles around the eyes and tighten the eyelids.

Step 4

Lie on a sofa or bed and hang your head over the edge slightly, so your head is tilting toward the ground, increasing the blood flow and oxygen to your head. Open your eyes wide. Imagine trying to touch your eyebrows to the floor. Hold your eyes wide open for two to three seconds and then close your eyes, relaxing your forehead. Repeat the wide-eye exercise at least 10 times.

Step 5

Look in the mirror and frown as hard as you can, focusing on the forehead and the eyes. Hold your face in this position for two to three seconds. Open your eyes wide as if surprised, holding the surprised look for two to three seconds. Repeat the frown/surprised exercise at least 10 times to help tone the muscles around the eyes.

Step 6

Sit straight and hold your head up, looking straight ahead. Look up toward the ceiling while keeping your head stationary. Place your middle and ring fingers against the outside corners of both eyes, gently pressing against the area. Squint your eyes at least 50 times to help tone the upper lids.
