If the belt on your treadmill begins skipping, you need to troubleshoot and repair the problem as soon as possible. You could trip and fall --- and risk suffering an injury --- if you walk or run on a belt that is skipping. The solution might be something simple, such as a belt adjustment, or it may be more involved, such as a belt replacement. Consult the owner's manual that came with your treadmill for specific instructions.
Tension
If the belt is skipping under your feet, the belt could be loose and need tightening. This is particularly true if you have recently adjusted or lubricated your belt. Lift the middle edge of the belt. If you can lift it more than 3 or 4 inches above the platform, the belt is too loose. Use an Allen wrench or hex key to adjust the rear roller bolts and tighten the belt. Do not overtighten the belt as this can damage the belt, motor or rollers.
Lubrication
Treadmill belts require lubrication to keep them running smoothly across the running deck. If the belt becomes dry, this increases the friction between the deck and the belt. These dry spots can stick, causing the belt to skip or slip. Reach under the walking belt; if it feels dry to the touch, it may need lubricated. Consult your treadmill instructions for the proper lubricant to use for your machine. Note that not all treadmills require lubrication; some manufacturers lubricate the belt at the factory. You may void your warranty if you apply lubricant to these machines.
Under the Hood
The drive belt runs between the treadmill's motor and the front roller; it can wear and loosen over time. If the drive belt slips, this jump transfers to the walking belt, making it skip. The drive belt may need tightened or replaced. If you tighten the drive belt yourself, be careful that you don't overtighten it. This creates undue stress on the motor and rollers and can result in more damage to your treadmill.
If the pulley on the front roller loses its grip on the roller, this can result in a skip in your treadmill belt. The front roller or pulley may need repaired or replaced.
Considerations
Only perform repairs or maintenance on your treadmill that the manufacturer recommends. If your treadmill is still under warranty, you may void the warranty if you perform unauthorized repairs on your machine. Do not work on any part of the treadmill that you are not familiar with. Contact your treadmill manufacturer for assistance if you are unable to locate the source of the skip in your belt.
