From the time your children get their first tooth, dental hygiene is important. Proper brushing and flossing can help remove bacteria, plaque and food while also strengthening and cleaning each tooth. Most children rush through brushing their teeth, but the American Dental Association recommends that they take their time and thoroughly brush twice a day for at least two minutes.
Step 1
Have your children brush their teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and again before bed. Also, encourage them to brush after eating and drinking to remove food from their teeth and prevent cavities. MayoClinic.com says they should wait 30 minutes after eating acidic foods before brushing; these foods can weaken tooth enamel and brushing too early can cause more damage.
Step 2
Pick a brush that is designed for children and has soft bristles. The package should have a label indicating such. Replace the toothbrush every three months.
Step 3
Use a fluoride-based toothpaste. According to KidsHealth, fluoride makes teeth strong and protects teeth from cavities. Pick flavored or colorful toothpaste for children that will help promote teeth brushing.
Step 4
Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste per brushing. Have your children hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against their teeth and move in small circular motions. Instruct them to brush each tooth on the front, top and sides.
Step 5
Set a timer for two to three minutes. According to Colgate, this is how long children should brush their teeth to clean their mouth fully. You also can play their favorite song or have them use a toothbrush with a built-in timer.
Step 6
Instruct your children to brush their tongue, roof of their mouth and cheeks lightly to remove bacteria and prevent bad breath. Have them work from back to front using a lightly forward brushing motion.
Step 7
Have your kids floss your teeth at least once a day to remove food particles and buildup between the teeth. Colgate says that children over 9 years old should be able to floss their own teeth.
Step 8
Use about 18 inches of floss and have them wrap the floss securely around their middle or index fingers. Have them use their thumbs to guide the floss and move it between their teeth in a saw-like motion. Have them pull the floss against their tooth to form a C-shape to clean between their gums and teeth. Instruct them to pull the floss up and down against the side of each tooth in their mouth.
