Bellyfat can now be a thing of the past. To get a slim and trim waistline, following a healthy diet and exercise routine is in order. It's a misconception that a dieter can spot-reduce any part of her body by focusing on a specific exercise. However, a healthy diet does assist with overall weight loss goals.
Diet
A healthy and balanced diet is a must for a flat tummy. Eating smaller and more frequent meals and snacks is also important; it keeps the metabolism revved up. In June of 2011, the USDA debuted a new eating guide called My Plate. Portion out your plate in four sections: fruits, grains, vegetables and proteins. Include dairy on the side. Following this eating style helps you get the nutrients you need in adequate portion sizes.
Exercise
The National Institutes of Health recommends getting 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise most days of the week. This type of exercise increases your heart rate, which in turn burns fat. Examples of this would be brisk walking, biking, jogging, dancing and taking an aerobics class. Incorporating strength training into your routine will also help burn calories and improve muscle tone. It is always recommended to consult with your physician before starting an exercise routine.
Alcohol
According to the Mayo Clinic, drinking alcohol in excess can cause you to gain belly fat. Alcohol sabotages your diet; it is high in calories and also stores as fat if the body cannot break it down. Alcohol can also lower inhibitions, which may make one give in to late-night snacking. If you wish to shrink your belly, cut down your alcohol intake to no more than four drinks per week.
Stress
High levels of stress can wreak havoc on your weight loss efforts as well. When our bodies are under stress, the hormone cortisol increases. Cortisol is responsible for storing fat around the belly. Take time for yourself daily to relax and unwind. Some examples include listening to relaxing music, practicing yoga, exercising, journaling, meditating or talking with a friend or family member. Managing your stress effectively will help balance cortisol levels, which will help fight fat around the midsection.
