Working out is an essential part of being healthy, but, if you're uncomfortable in your clothes, you may be tempted to shorten your workout. Try on each piece of exercise clothing before you buy it, just as you would with your other clothes. Don't buy anything that you need to pull at or adjust or that has uncomfortable seams or elastic.
Tops
You're moving and bouncing around when running or using various machines, so choose a loose T-shirt if you're uncomfortable with showing off your shape. If you don't mind wearing clingy fabric, a tank top keeps you cool and allows you to move freely. Women shouldn't choose tops that are very low-cut, since this may cause others to stare. Choose a shirt made of light cotton so you're both comfortable and cool. Choose a dark color fabric if you're self-conscious about looking sweaty.
Bottoms
Between your own sweating, the heat from others and the heat that's pumped into the gym, you are likely to melt working out in pants. If you're planning to run or lift weights, wear nylon shorts that hit mid-thigh so you have free range of motion without having them ride up. If you're planning to use a machine that you sit on, choose bike shorts or capri length exercise leggings since loose fabric quickly rides up when you use these machines.
Undergarments
When you're hitting the gym, underwear is a must. Some stretch fabrics become slightly transparent when you bend over, so going commando is not an option. Wear a comfortable pair of cotton underwear with full coverage so you don't need to adjust while working out. Women must wear sports bras even if they have small chests. Choose a bra that has thick straps and a wide elastic band so it supports your chest. When you're changing after your workout, change undergarments discreetly and quickly, since walking around naked can make others uncomfortable.
Shoes
A pair of sturdy and comfortable running shoes is perhaps the most important accessory when you're exercising. Your shoes should have arch support and cushioned soles to absorb the impact of whatever activity you're doing. Wear cushioned cotton socks for extra protection. Don't wear squeaky shoes to the gym, since you might irritate others with every step. If you plan to shower after your workout, bring a pair of plastic flip-flops to wear in the shower. These protect you from bacteria and the shower from your germs.
