Because a cast covers your skin for an extended period of time, it makes washing the area difficult and, in some cases, impossible. As a result, dead skin cells, dirt and other debris accumulate underneath the cast. Once removed, the skin often itches, has a dry, peeling and/or scaly appearance and may even smell bad. The skin underneath a cast is sensitive and all cases vary, so speak with your doctor about proper care following a cast removal.

Step 1

Soak the affected area in warm water for 20 minutes.

Step 2

Use tepid water and a mild soap to gently wash your skin after soaking.

Step 3

Gently wipe a clean and dry terry towel across the surface to wash away the peeling skin. Do not scrub hard, as this may harm the new skin.

Step 4

Apply an alcohol- and perfume-free lotion or oil to the affected area following each wash.

Step 5

Repeat the soaking, cleansing, wiping and moisturizing process twice daily until you've removed all the peeling skin.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Soap
