The speed at which you jog or run is directly related to the number of calories you are burning. For example, while a 5 MPH pace burns about eight times your resting metabolism, which is the number of calories you burn while simply sitting down, a 6 MPH pace burns 10 times your resting metabolism. Without a GPS-enabled running watch or smartphone application, it can be difficult to keep track of your exact speed at any specific point in your jog. However, you can calculate the average speed of your jog based on distance and time.
Step 1
Measure the distance of your jogging route. If you normally jog around your neighborhood, drive the route and use the odometer in your car to measure the distance.
Step 2
Time yourself during your jog using a stopwatch or the timer feature on a sports watch. Otherwise, jot down your starting and ending times from a regular watch and calculate the difference.
Step 3
Divide the number of minutes you jogged by 60 to convert the time to hours in decimal form. For example, 42 minutes divided by 60 equals 0.7 hours.
Step 4
Divide the number of hours you jogged by the distance you jogged to calculate the decimal form of hours per mile. For example, 0.7 hours of jogging divided by 3.6 miles equals 0.194 hours per mile.
Step 5
Divide 1 by the number of hours per mile to calculate miles per hour. For example, 1 divided by 0.194 equals 5.15 MPH.
