A hernia is part of an internal organ that has pushed, or herniated, through the weak part of a muscle. Hernia repair is a surgical procedure where the surgeon pushes the herniated organ back into position then closes the opening in the muscle tissue. Because the muscle tissue is still weak, you risk recreating the hernia when you exercise. To strengthen and support the muscle during the healing process, and prevent future herniation, you must take precautions when you work out after a hernia repair. Consult your physician before starting an exercise program.
Step 1
Wear a truss to support the weak muscles and prevent a recurrence of the hernia during exercise. Have your doctor prescribe one for you to ensure a proper fit.
Step 2
Start with low-impact aerobic exercises, such as cycling, and work your way up to more vigorous exercise, such as running. Starting slowly prevents you from rupturing your incisions.
Step 3
Incorporate upper-body resistance training using weight machines and light dumbbells. Avoid exercises that flex your core for the first three to four weeks after surgery, such as the crunch machine, which can aggravate an umbilical hernia.
Step 4
Avoid lower-body weights for the first three to four weeks after surgery, such as squats and lunges, which can aggravate an inguinal hernia.
Step 5
Increase the duration and intensity of your aerobic exercise after the repair has completely healed.
Step 6
Add abdominal exercises, such as crunches, gradually after the repair has completely healed. Continue wearing your truss to provide additional support.
Step 7
Include Pilates and yoga in your exercise routine. Sign up for a class at your gym or use an exercise video. These exercises strengthen your core muscles to prevent future hernias.
Step 8
Incorporate body-weight exercises for your lower body, such as lunges, squats and plies. When you are able to do two sets of 10 of each exercise, graduate to weight machines, then to free weights. Continue wearing your truss for additional support.
Step 9
Consult your physician after six months of steady exercise to check your progress and discuss exercising without the truss.
Tips and Warnings
- Stop exercising immediately and seek medical attention if the hernia bulges or worsens, or if you experience severe and persistent abdominal pain.
