Teeth grinding -- also referred to as bruxism -- is a relatively harmless, yet rather annoying habit. Bruxism can develop out of stress or anxiety, but can also be the result of eating with braces. However, when it is prolonged, teeth grinding can damage your teeth and jaw. In particular, bruxism can lead to abrasions in the chewing surfaces of your teeth, according to Dr. Jason T. Bock of Bock Orthodontics. Bruxism is often a treatable condition, especially when it comes to braces. There are numerous actions you can take to help prevent teeth grinding as you eat.

Step 1

Eat softer foods. Replace tough meat with tender, lean meat, and enjoy mashed potatoes, peanut butter, soup, noodles and other soft foods.

Step 2

Take your time when you eat. Allow yourself enough time to relax and fully chew your food at each meal. Avoid eating heavy meals when you are stressed.

Step 3

Cut your food into small pieces. This will make the pieces less difficult to chew, which can lead to less teeth grinding.

Step 4

Perform tongue exercises to help properly align your teeth, mouth, jaw and lips. Continuously write the letter "N" with your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Write the letter "N" for one minute at a time, three times per day.

Step 5

Talk to your orthodontist about your grinding; he may recommend a special night appliance that can be worn as you sleep to help prevent grinding during the day.
