Scars can be the result of surgery, injury, illness, an accident or even acne. Scars can take a toll on you both physically and emotionally. They can make you fee self-conscious or even remind you of an event you would much rather forget. Physical scars can be unsightly. While scars are harmless to your health, there are many ways of dealing with scars on your body. To treat a scar, you may need to deal with the mental and physical aspects of your scar.

Dealing With Scars Emotionally

Step 1

Be proud of your scars. Your scars have a story to tell. Scars may indicate an accident, how you bravely recovered from an injury or illness, a time you tried a new activity or even the birth of a child.

Step 2

Focus on the positives of your appearance as opposed to being self-conscious. Many scars are not even noticed by others.

Step 3

Realize that scars fade. As a scar becomes older, it will gradually fade away and become less noticeable.

Step 4

Talk about it. If your scars are the result of a traumatic event, discuss it with a close friend or family member. If you are not comfortable talking with a friend or family member, seek the advice of a counselor.

Dealing With Scars Physically

Step 1

Minimize scars using an over-the-counter scar minimizer cream. Apply two to three times per day to help with scarring.

Step 2

Use a tinted moisturizer or oil-free concealer to lightly cover your scars. This can help make them less noticeable.

Step 3

Talk to your doctor about treatments for scars. Treatment options may include resurfacing, dermabrasion or other laser therapies. Your doctor can help determine a treatment method that is appropriate for your health, the type of scars you have and the severity of your scars.
