Facial swelling is one form of dermatitis, or inflammation of the skin. It can be caused by allergic reactions to chemicals, foods, bites or stings, or by exhaustion. In some cases, over-the-counter antihistamines may be most effective to treat facial swelling, but some herbal folk remedies may also be effective. Many of these herbs are available as creams from stores that specialize in natural medicine. Always follow the instructions on the label, and see a doctor if your symptoms persist.

Step 1

Apply a chamomile cream to swollen areas. Follow the instructions on the label. Alternatively, mix powdered chamomile with water to create a smooth paste and apply it to the swollen areas.

Step 2

Apply calendula cream to swollen areas. Don't use calendula on broken skin.

Step 3

Mix one part arnica oil with 10 parts 70 percent ethanol, then dilute the mixture three to 10 times with water. Soak a washcloth in the solution, and then apply the cloth to the swollen areas. Avoid broken skin and the area immediately surrounding the eyes. Don't take arnica internally.

Tips and Warnings

  • A balanced diet and sufficient sleep can also help reduce facial swelling. Stop using possible allergens, such as new cosmetics and unfamiliar foods, to learn whether one of them may have caused your swelling. Avoid scratching or rubbing irritated areas.
  • Always check with your doctor before beginning a treatment, and research side effects thoroughly. If any treatment worsens your symptoms, stop using it immediately.
