The Gerson Institute is responsible for certifying medical professionals who have completed specialized training as Gerson Therapy Practitioners. Gerson treatment involves using nutritional therapy for those suffering from chronic illnesses and degenerative diseases. Gerson Therapy aims to activate the body's own healing mechanisms through the consumption of organic foods and juices, natural supplements and detoxification. While medical professionals must be certified as Gerson Therapy Practitioners to offer treatment to outpatients, the Gerson Institute also offers a condensed training program for those wishing to use elements of the treatment for a loved one or family member at home.
Step 1
Get certification as a licensed medical professional. You must be a licensed medical professional to begin Gerson Therapy Practitioner Training. Accepted licenses include those of Medical Doctor or MD, Naturopathic Doctor or ND, and Nurse Practitioner or NP. Acquiring the medical licenses accepted by the Gerson Institute generally requires years of college level education, clinical experience and passing of state examinations. Contact the Gerson Institute to determine if your type of medical professional certification qualifies you to begin Gerson Therapy Practitioner Training.
Step 2
Complete your required reading. The Gerson Institute requires that you read "A Cancer Therapy," by Dr. Max Gerson, and "Healing the Gerson Way," by Charlotte Gerson. Both of these books are available from the Gerson Institute book store.
Step 3
Apply for Gerson Therapy Practitioner Training. Complete the Gerson Practitioner Screening Application. On this application, you must include details on your professional medical background. Submit your application by email or by fax.
Step 4
Complete Module I of your training. You must complete a five-day, 35-hour training program at the Gerson Institute in San Diego, CA. In this training program, you will learn the basis of Gerson Therapy, including the application of therapy, preparation of food and juices and the design of individual therapy protocols. You will also take classes in biology and physiology and learn patient assessment and case management skills. The cost of Module I was approximately $2,000 at the time of publication and included all instructional materials as well as daily breakfast and lunch.
Step 5
Complete Module II of your training. Once you have completed your Module I training, you must complete Module II as part of your own medical practice. An experienced Gerson Practitioner will supervise your management and treatment of three cases over a period of 18 to 24 months. Your supervising practitioner will emphasize clinical data collection, case management and the development of individual protocols. You must submit your three case histories and protocol design for review. Once your supervising practitioner approves your submitted work, the Gerson Institute will certify you as a Gerson Therapy Practitioner.
