For some people, ordering lunch for the office may seem more stressful than actual meetings. You're responsible for making sure everyone gets healthy food that helps them produce their best work for the rest of the day, but you also want everyone to be happy -- not to mention, there's probably a budget. A little planning and some basic nutritional info makes sure your favorite restaurant or caterer delivers a healthy, tasty lunch for everyone.
Step 1
Ask about special dietary needs. Email everyone who may attend your lunch meeting or eat the food you order. Try a sentence like, "I want to make sure I avoid foods that trigger allergies and respect religious or animal-friendly diets." State law in many places requires restaurants to keep each of the top eight allergens -- milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat and soy -- separate from other foods. Ask your restaurant or caterer about this if you're unsure and be very clear about people's needs. Food allergies can result in anything from hives to death.
Step 2
Select a main dish. It'll be easier to stay within a budget if you order food people can eat with their hands, so that you don't have to buy utensils. This is how people usually end up with pizza, which can be a great option, if you order a healthy one. Try wraps or sandwiches, too. You need whole grains, a lean protein source and enough fat to get through the day without putting people into a food coma. Chicken, tofu, walnuts, tuna, olives, orzo and whole wheat wraps or dough are substantial and tasty main ingredients.
Step 3
Select side dishes. People like at least one side dish, but you may want to consider two if your budget allows it, so that you satisfy everyone's tastes and needs. Plus, generosity always motivates people, so don't be stingy. Pack in nutrients and include fruits and vegetables, especially with high fiber or water contents to keep people feeling full, but not sleepy. Melons, bananas, tomato and cucumber salads or pita triangles with hummus all make for healthy, inexpensive side dishes.
Tips and Warnings
- If someone experiences an allergic reaction, call 911 and, as long as they have no medication allergies, administer an over-the-counter antihistamine to help before emergency services arrive.
