Recent growth in organic food sales proves that consumers are taking an increasing interest in how and where their food is produced. A survey conducted by the Organic Trade Association showed that U.S. organic food sales skyrocketed from $1 billion in 1990 to $26.7 billion in 2010. The sale of organic fruits and vegetables has shown the fastest increase, growing nearly 12 percent over 2009 sales. Consequently, as public organic companies become more lucrative, investors are beginning to take notice. Below are several of the most recognizable and profitable organic food companies -- a good place to start if you are considering investing in one.

Whole Foods Markets

Whole Foods Markets was founded in 1980 in Austin and now has more than 300 stores in North America and the United Kingdom. The company bills itself as "the world's leader in natural and organic foods" and operates according to its mission statement, "Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet." Moreover, FORTUNE magazine has named it one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" for the past 13 years.

Horizon Organic

Founded in 1991, Horizon Organic is the U.S.' leading brand of certified organic milk. Its highly recognizable red carton is becoming ubiquitous in major food markets across the country. Horizon produces more than 130 pesticide-, hormone- and antibiotic free products, including yogurt, sour cream, butter, cream cheese and single-serve milk.

The Hain Celestial Group

Probably best known for its line of Celestial Seasonings teas and Earth's Best baby and toddler foods, the Hain Celestial Group is based in Melville, NY. It is a leading provider of both organic food and personal care products. It also produces such recognizable organic brands such as Arrowhead Mills, Rice Dream, Soy Dream and JASON.

Campbell Soup Company

Consumers may be more likely to purchase organic foods if they are produced by a recognizable and established brand. As such, major food companies, like the Campbell Soup Company, have begun to produce a line of organic products. Campbell's now produces organic soups, tomato juices, broths and pasta sauces; as the organic food trend continues to swing upward, you will likely see more large corporations enter the organic product race.
