Your body undergoes many changes throughout pregnancy. One noticeable change during the early stages and throughout your pregnancy is the increase in bust size. This change is a natural process and signifies a healthy, progressing pregnancy. During this time, your body naturally stores more fat, some in the breasts. Other changes, such as the development of milk glands, also can contribute to changes in bust size.

Description

During the first stages of pregnancy, it is common to experience noticeable growth in the breasts and bust region. Baby Center explains that in addition to this change, you might expect to experience itchiness from your stretching skin, as well as stretch marks, darkened and larger nipples and general sensitivity of the breasts. By the second trimester, it is not unusual to increase breast size by 4 to 6 inches and one to three cup sizes, according to Sue Huml, an international board certified lactation consultant. Breast size usually stabilizes by the sixth to eighth month of pregnancy.

Explanation

The change in bust size during pregnancy is due to a number of physiological transformations. The hormones estrogen and progesterone stimulate growth and swelling of various milk-producing glands and milk ducts. There also is an increase in the size and number of blood vessels to help transport nutrients and fluids to the area, as well as an increase in blood flow. Additional layers of fat also build up to protect the breasts, the vessels and the glands.

What to Do

Bust growth is a natural part of pregnancy. Baby Center recommends that you take the time to get properly fitted by a knowledgeable salesperson of a department store or maternity shop. A secure-fitting bra will not only improve your comfort-level, but also will ease the extra pressure and weight off your back and promote better posture. Underwire bras might no longer be comfortable and you might need to switch to maternity or cotton bras. Because your breasts might continue to grow throughout your pregnancy, consider purchasing bras that fit on the tightest clasp setting, which you can continue to let out as your cup size and chest circumference expand.

Considerations

If you experience no changes in your breast size or appearance during pregnancy, other factors might be involved. Speak with your physician or lactation specialist if you have concerns or questions.
